how were we to know?

Earlier this year, a distant cousin invited us to dinner at a restaurant. Thinking it was just a regular family get-together, we showed up only to find out it was her 25th wedding anniversary celebration.
Gosh, we had no idea. We’d gone there terribly under-dressed and bearing no anniversary gifts whatsoever. It was pretty embarrassing. But seriously how were we supposed to know if she didn’t tell us.
She’d said we were invited to dinner and we took it to mean just a simple dinner with the family. Why don’t people just come straight out with the facts to save us all the embarrassment?
By the way, since we hadn’t brought a gift, we gave her the customary ang pow (a cash gift contained in a red envelope).
