a store desperate for business

Times must be really bad. Some stores are so deprived of sales they’re resorting to ways to tricking customers to pay for ‘already broken’ costume jewelry.
They put the broken costume jewelry on display and then if you knock it off the shelf by accident, they make you pay for it even though it was already broken before you even touched it.
A friend told me how she and a few of her friends have been made to pay, on several occasions, even though it was clear each time that the jewelry was already broken by someone else, not them.
It’s quite obvious this store is starved of business. There’re never any customers inside no matter what time you walk by.
They’re on the verge of closing down even though the store is colorfully decorated with exotic cushion covers, drapes, belly dancing gear and glittery costume jewelry. Looks like they’re trying to make a few quick bucks before they close down.
